Complete SSB Selection Process :
Shortlisting Before SSB, candidates apply through: NDA (National Defence Academy) CDS (Combined Defence Services) AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) INET (Indian Navy Entrance Test) Technical Entries (TES, UES) NCC Special Entry, etc. Shortlisted candidates are called for SSB interview.
Stage 1:
Screening Test (Day 1) The first day is crucial. It decides if a candidate will continue for the next 4 days.
1. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test Verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions (around 50–60 questions) Time: 30 minutes
2. Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT) A blurred picture is shown for 30 seconds. Candidates write a story in 4 minutes and then narrate it in a group. Followed by a group discussion on the picture. Outcome: Selected candidates go to Stage 2. Others are sent home the same day.
Stage 2:
Psychology Tests (Day 2) These are designed by psychologists to assess subconscious personality traits.
1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) 12 pictures shown (1 blank) Write a story for each in 4 minutes.
2. Word Association Test (WAT) 60 words flashed for 15 seconds each. Write the first thought that comes to mind.
3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT) 60 situations to answer in 30 minutes.
4. Self Description Test (SDT) Write about yourself as seen by parents, friends, teachers, and your own opinion.
Stage 3:
Group Testing Officer Tasks (Day 3 & 4) Conducted by a GTO (Group Testing Officer) to assess team spirit, leadership, communication, and physical stamina.
1. Group Discussion (GD) Two topics discussed in a group.
2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE) Candidates plan a solution to a military or civil problem on a map.
3. Progressive Group Task (PGT) Physical obstacle task with group cooperation.
4. Half Group Task (HGT) Similar to PGT but with fewer members.
5. Lecturette 3-minute speech on a chosen topic.
6. Command Task You act as commander and lead a team to solve a physical task.
7. Individual Obstacles 10 tasks in 3 minutes to test stamina and courage.
8. Final Group Task (FGT) Final task requiring full team effort.
Stage 4:
Personal Interview (Any Day from 2 to 4) A one-on-one interview with a senior officer. Topics include: Family, academics, hobbies, achievements Current affairs, defence issues Situation-based questions HR questions: strengths, weaknesses, failures Duration: 30 to 60 minutes.
Stage 5: Conference (Day 5)
All assessors (Psychologist, GTO, Interviewing Officer) discuss each candidate. Final decision is made. Candidates face a short interview with the board president or senior officer. Results declared the same day.
After Selection – Medical and Merit
1. Medical Examination Conducted at Military Hospital for 3–5 days. Includes vision, hearing, height, weight, X-rays, ECG, etc.
2. All India Merit List Only medically fit candidates are considered. Selection is based on merit and availability of vacancies.
