Why do we eat FOOD?
Food, the fuel which provides us with energy and power to live and perform
daily chores, until we die.
Where this food does comes from???
Now this question was answered to us when we were in 1st or 2nd
Standard and till now it is being answered just with more depth. Here, we
will not go in much depth, at first, so let’s reminisce, what was taught to us
in our childhood, in that very chapter called ‘sources of food’.
It said basically there are two sources of food, animals and plants. Animal
products such as meat, chicken, pork, eggs, milk which are consumed at large
scale around the world. Now comes the bit which will lead us to its depth and
is the primary focus of today, the very favourite of vegans, one and only plant
products. Now there is such a huge
population, so we need lots of food, so we will have to grow them, and you of
course know that farmers in different area grows them and when those farmers
grow plant products on large scale, we call them crop. So plant products grown
on large scale are crops.
Crops grown in India
Now there are multitude of crops grown all around the India and globe. But
you must have observed, crops grown differ from region to region. Doesn’t it
intrigue your curiosity, why is it so!!??
No problem, it has or not, but
today you will get the answer; we are going to delve deeper and deeper and
explore the horizons of this question and especially in the case of the diverse
India.
The crop that will be grown in a certain region depends upon mainly three
factors: Soil, climate and amount of water available. Not every crop can be
grown in every region (today it is grown, about which we will discuss later),
like rice can’t be grown in dry regions as it is a water intensive crop while wheat
hates lots of water so it is better suited for regions with less rain. Also
crops like cotton can’t handle every soil; it is at its best in black soil
while cashew will cry if you don’t let it accompany laterite soil. Apples are
more suited to cold regions but coconut loves heat and humidity. These above
are just few examples that makes clear how soil, climate and water playing
their role pretty nicely.
INDIA IS A VAST COUNTRY AND VARIETY OF CROPS
When we talk about
Indian crops, we must know its terrain (that expands with mountains,
rivers, flats, costal of sea and plateau), its people (that diversified
in religion, caste, colors, language and cultures) and foods (that fully
depends on crops grown in the region).
India has a
variety of land forms, net of riversand weather so there is much variation in
crops grown in various terrain as well as variation in foods of people in
different terrain. Therefore it is very necessary to divide the whole
subcontinent in various terrains.
India terrain may be divided in
THE NORTH AND
THE SOUTH SEPARATED BY VINDHYA RANGE. Again Southern India may be divided in Western coastal and Eastern coastal region. The north India may be divided in
land of five rivers,
land of Ganga and
land of Brahmaputra.
These all division is based on crops grown on the terrain.
The North (fertile land of rivers

Now as promised, if I move to the intriguing India, and I
promise you India is the finest place to see the different crops and cropping
pattern as it is very diverse in climate, soil and water availability too and
as we go further you will notice this is the base of the cuisinal diversity, I
talked about in my last essay on ‘Indian
cuisine and Festivals’. Now if we start from
top, that is the Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, they doesn’t suit any
cereal crops but are very best at growing fruits such as apples, oranges and
dry fruits. The extremely cold climate there doesn’t support any cereal crops
but they are able to produce some amount of millets for their consumption that
too in some of warmer regions. Now if we take a peek at the middle and the
northwestern part, they are the champions of wheat production and millets such
as jowar, bajra, and ragi. As their less humid soil and less rain area nicely
supports them. They even grow most of the pulses for India, including Karnataka
too.
As we move to south, north east, eastern part of UP, deltaic regions, there
are vast rice fields and even south region and some of north eat stern’s such
as West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, they are able to grow rice twice in the cropping
season thanks to the monsoon bringing plenty of rain and to the alluvial soil.

Now you must be getting, why south Indians have rice as an important
ingredient of all their dishes and Bihari and Bengalis love to eat rice. See
these regions crops and their diet are totally correlated because isn’t it
obvious that you will eat what you grow in plenty; it will be something that
all the masses can afford. Now eastern people of India, don’t have variety of
vegetables in their diet as they can’t produce in their region while south,
north east and some of north Indians consumes a huge variety of vegetables as,
their soil, climate is favourable to them. The people in west and North West
consume coarse grains and wheat as they have fields and fields with that
growing.
puri paneer |
But, there is a change in that eating habit, even today they are with the crops
that grow at a plenty there but due to the technical, communication, scientific
changes are bringing a lot of change in their diets. They are able to include
crops that were not grown in their regions. First thanks to the fast and
feasible transportation system which is transporting tons of vegetables to
different states, even making them accessible to crops of different regions,
south Indians are loving chapattis and north western are showing love to rice.
And big thanks to the scientists who brought technologies and variety of
genetically modified seed. Earlier it used to be even hard for these regions to
produce their regional crops even for all their masses. But today even western
and north western are able to produce rice. This has erased the problem of food
sufficiency to a certain level.
The green revolution and the rise of transportation and storage facilities
have give path for food to reach millions of empty plates. These changes are
paving way towards new times. A new revolution is also now taking its root as
the stomach is getting full. The coming of internet and its super fast
developments has brought us to such a stage where we are sharing our daily meal
with everyone through these profound social media platforms. We are opening our
taste buds to variety of cereals and trying it through be online shopping and
browsing the recipes on internet. Today a lot of people walk to the kitchen in
the cities because they think that there is internet there to help them cook.
And it seems, with these developments with better government policies,
providing access to food to everyone will definitely find a way to eliminate
hunger from this world one day. All these phenomenon of globalization, and
sharing your surplus with deficit and the era of industrialization with pre
cooked or preserved meals will remove hunger…
